Welcome message from the Director
On behalf of the Management and staff of the Centre for Islamic legal studies, (CILS), Institute of Administration, Kongo Campus, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, I wish to warmly welcome you to this specialized research and teaching Centre. It was founded in 1966 as an autonomous research and teaching academic unit with special attachment to the Faculty of Law of Ahmadu Bello University. The Centre was formally inaugurated by His Excellency. Late Col. Musa Usman, former Military Governor of the defunct North-Eastern State of Nigeria and under the Vice Chancellorship of the late Professor Ishaya S. Audu on 22nd March, 1971. The Centre was primarily established to promote the growth and development of Islamic and comparative Law in Nigeria, West African sub- region, the Middle Eastern countries and other relevant Legal systems in the world such as English Law. It has increased in size and scope under the successive. Directorship of the late Professor Noel James Coulson (1965-1966), the late professor Victor S.Mackinnon (1966-1969),the late professor Zakin Mustafa (1969-1972), the late Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Khalid (1972-1975); The late Alh. Yahaya Muhammad Kaman (Chairman-1974). The late Dr.Sulaiman Kumo (1975),the late Alh.Ma’aji Isa shani (1975), the late Professor Muhammad Abdul Manan (August 1976),the late professor Abdur-Rahman I.doi (January 1977 -1991), Dr.I.N Sada(1991-1992); Mal. Ibrahim Sulaiman (1992- 2002); Professor I.N. Sada (2002-2006),Dr. Muhammad Sadiq Abubakar (2006-2010), professor I.A Aliyu (2010- 2015), Dr. Bala Babaji (February 2015 to date).

Our mission and vision statements serve as a reflection of our unwavering commitment to not only shaping a brighter future but also making a profound, lasting impact on the communities we serve.
Mission
1) To explore and utilize new frontiers of learning and teaching Islamic Law;
2) To conduct research for the generation of Islamic Legal literature and dissemination of knowledge through conferences, the Media and ICT;
3) To build the capacity of specialists and interested Nigerians in Islamic Law;
4) To develop multi-disciplinary and international collaborations towards sustaining scholarly culture.
Vision
The Centre for Islamic Legal Studies shall be a centre of excellence in research and training, providing exclusive and unique research outputs and capacity building on Islamic law where the Nigerian legal community’s needs are met with satisfaction.
